TWC entry requirements for Malaysian students (UEC, STPM & SPM)

Tung Wah College publishes official entry requirements for Malaysian qualifications for non-local applicants to its bachelor’s degree programmes. This page reproduces the published requirements for UEC and STPM/SPM holders, with the English language routes.

The requirements below are TWC’s published minimum entrance requirements (not including English language) for bachelor’s degree programmes. TWC has not yet published AY2027/28 entry requirements, so the AY2026/27 published requirements below are the current reference.

Hong Kong academic calendar — when does the academic year start?

The Hong Kong academic year at TWC
SemesterTiming
Semester 1September – December
Semester 2January – May
Semester 3 (certain majors only)June – July

The academic year works differently in Malaysia and Hong Kong. Malaysian schools and pre-university programmes usually start in January — most secondary schools and STPM programmes run roughly January to November/December, and Chinese independent high schools (UEC) also follow a January-start year. In Hong Kong, Semester 1 starts in September. Plan ahead: check how your UEC or STPM/SPM exam dates line up with the September intake, and make sure your results and English evidence will be ready in time. A Youth Dorm representative can help you map your exam calendar to the TWC timeline.

UEC in depth — how the UEC route works

The Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) is administered by Dong Jiao Zong and taken in Malaysia’s Chinese independent high schools. TWC publishes a UEC route for bachelor’s degree applicants — here is what the published route covers.

A published qualification framework

Based on the AY2026/27 reference, TWC’s non-local admission material lists UEC as a recognised qualification route for bachelor’s degree applicants. The route sets requirements on the number of UEC subjects and how they are taken: passes (Grade C or above) in at least 7 UEC subjects, of which 6 must be obtained in the same sitting.

The same-sitting rule in plain language

“Same sitting” means subjects taken in one examination session. TWC’s published route requires 6 of your UEC subjects to be obtained in the same sitting — plan your exam timetable accordingly and confirm the current wording before you schedule examinations.

English evidence

UEC English at Grade B4 is listed in TWC’s official English-language requirements table as a degree English route. IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT alternatives are also published (note: TOEFL changed its scoring in January 2026), and IELTS Online and TOEFL Home Edition results are accepted.

Admissions discretion

Meeting a published minimum does not guarantee admission. TWC decides eligibility and may exercise case-specific assessment discretion. Youth Dorm can help you prepare your questions; TWC makes the final decision.

YD’s guidance stays at framework level. Exact grade letters and thresholds are published on the official TWC page — check there before you apply: Admission Requirements for Non-local Applicants (Bachelor’s Degree Programmes).

Common questions from Malaysian students

Can UEC students apply to Tung Wah College?

Yes. TWC publishes a UEC route for non-local bachelor’s degree applicants: passes (Grade C or above) in at least 7 UEC subjects, of which 6 subjects shall be obtained in the same sitting, plus the UEC English requirement (B4) or another accepted English route. Meeting the published minimum does not guarantee admission — TWC makes the final eligibility decision.

Can STPM or SPM students apply?

TWC publishes an STPM/SPM route: 3 STPM subjects in the same sitting (other than language subjects) plus passes (Grade C or above) in at least 7 SPM subjects of which 6 shall be obtained in the same sitting, plus STPM or SPM English at Grade C or another accepted English route. Check the current official wording before you plan your examination schedule.

What does “same sitting” mean?

“Same sitting” means subjects taken in one examination session. TWC’s published Malaysian routes require a defined number of your subjects to be obtained in the same sitting — plan your exam timetable accordingly and confirm the current wording with TWC before applying.

Which programmes can Malaysian students apply to?

Malaysian students can apply to the TWC bachelor’s programmes that are open to non-local applicants — see programmes open to non-local applicants. Programme availability for AY2027/28 must be confirmed when TWC opens the new cycle.[3]

Does meeting the minimum requirement guarantee admission?

No. Published requirements are the minimum for an application to be considered; they are only part of the assessment. TWC makes the final decision.
